It takes patience, but by following these rules, you can teach your dog how to do everything from rolling over to giving you high fives.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what trick you want your dog to learn. (i.e--rolling over)

  2. Step 2

Assign a vocal verbal command for the trick. (i.e--if you want the dog to roll over, your verbal command will be "roll over")

  3. Step 3

Go to your dog and get down on its level. Give the dog the verbal command (i.e--say "roll over") At the same time, physically move the dog into the trick position yourself. (so if your is laying on its stomach, physically roll the dog onto its back and then over again onto its stomach)

  4. Step 4

Practice previous step numerous times. Continue to physically move the dog's body into trick position. You MUST remember to issue the vocal command while re-positioning your pup. Doing these acts simultaneously ensures the dog will associate the command with the body movement and will inately do it on its own after several practices.

  5. Step 5

Let the dog go and issue the verbal command without touching the dog. If the dog completes the trick, then excellent! Give it praise followed by a treat. If the dog shows physical signs of attempting to do the trick but doesn't complete it all the way, revert back to previous step while giving dog verbal praise. Then let the dog do the trick on its own without assistance.

  6. Step 6

Give your pup lots of praise for a job well done.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice makes perfect. Don't give up. Your dog should master the trick within a few tries.
  • Be careful with certain tricks as not to place your pup in any physical danger.
