  • An open mind
  • Time for the ultimate search
  1. Step 1

    First determine what type of gown you want for the type of wedding you are going to plan. Make a list of the color, style, length, short sleeve or long sleeve? Then determine the time, effort, energy and what is your gown budget?

  2. Step 2

    Then go to the public library look and order bridal magazines for ideas. Also at the library, use the computer to check for gowns on eBay, craigslist,amazon.com, woreitonce.com, encorebridal.com and preownedweddingdresses.com. With all website, Consumer Beware and check with the Better Business Bureau regarding these sites.

  3. Step 3

    If you don't find anything there check your local upscale department stores such as Macy's. The best times to look are before and especially after major holidays such as Easter, Prom season or Christmas. After the holidays is a prime time for savings.

  4. Step 4

    Then check bridal outlets, goodwill stores, vintage and upscale consignment shops in your area. Always check with Friends and Family or Friends of a Friend of the Family as long as the gown is not terribly out of style.

  5. Step 5

    Lastly, shop at the bridal stores for clearance sales and trunk sale shows. If you find a gown before this last step, just remember that alterations are often cheaper than brand new Bridal Gowns. Another tidbit to remember is that it may only be worn once for one day.
