Step 1
If you know someone in the career you might be interested in pursuing - just talk to them. Most likely, they will love to share their experiences with you, and give you all the advice that they can. Ask them how they decided on this career, what schools they went to, what challenges they encountered, and anything else that comes to mind.
-
Step 2
Visit careeronestop.org - it's a site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, and you can find lots of career info and advice there. They have links to career counseling centers, tips for job seekers, salary information data, etc.
-
Step 3
Search the internet for forums that discuss specific careers. For example, if you are interested in a career as a chemist, you might want to visit the American Chemical Society website. If you can't find answers to the questions you are looking for, make your own post asking for advice.
-
Step 4
If you are still in school, visit the school guidance counselor. Don't underestimate their ability to give you career advice. In addition, talk to the teachers or professors that teach classes in the field you are interested in pursuing. They will often be able to offer advice on the best ways to pursue a given career or direct you to sources for more information.
-
Step 5
Remember though, that no matter how much career advice you get, you have to make the final decision on your own. Don't choose a career because others are telling you to, while your gut is against it. Decide what career you want to pursue and use the advice from others to accomplish the goal.
