If a skunk happens to wander inside your home and leaves behind that dreadful odor, you need to take action. Home-repair centers and pet product stores carry commercial odor-control products, and you can also make your own.

    • Citrus air freshener
    • Commercial odor control products
    • Hydrogen peroxide
    • Baking soda
    • Dishwashing liquid
    • Rubber or latex gloves
    • Clean towel or sponge

        Spray a citrus fragrance air freshener or 5:1 diluted Nature's Miracle or Odoban in the air before you start odor removal efforts if the smell is overpowering. Open windows, weather permitting.

        Apply a commercial product, such as Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, Skunk Off, Earth Friendly Products Skunk Odor Remover, Odormute or a similar product for floors, walls, carpets and furniture. The store-bought solutions have a fragrance and are designed to be safe around humans and pets.

        Perform a spot check on the area containing the skunk smell. Apply a small amount of the solution to an unnoticeable area to make sure it will not stain or discolor the area.

        Apply the liquid solution to walls and floors for five minutes. Check manufacturer’s instructions for commercial liquids.

        Remove the skunk smell from clothing, blankets and sheets, by soaking them in Nature's Miracle Laundry Detergent, OdoBan or a similar product to treat clothing; follow manufacturer’s instructions.

    • Wear gloves while using these products.

    • Open windows to help speed the drying of the sprays and elimination of the skunk odor.

    • You may need a second application if the smell is exceptionally strong. Wait until the areas have completely dried to see if the smell has abated.

    • Keep children and pets out of the area while using hydrogen peroxide.
