Things You'll Need:
- Internet Access
- Local newspapers
-
Step 1
Get online and do a quick search for local dog training schools. Any basic search engine can help. Be sure to check the www.craigslist.org "pets" section and your local newspaper's classifieds as well. Type "dog training schools" or "dog obedience training" or just "dog training." However, if you use "dog training schools" or "dog obedience schools," you are more likely to get organized classes rather than an amateur trainer.
-
Step 2
Write down the ones that look like possibilities. If you can't find any, don't worry yet.
-
Step 3
Most areas have a freebie weekly local newspaper. Pick one up, and look for any pet-oriented ones too. Flip through them, focussing on the classifieds section and any ads featuring dog training schools. If any look good, go back to your computer and type them into a search engine, and look for reviews. Also look for reviews for the dog training schools you wrote down earlier. Try www.yelp.com or www.epinions.com
-
Step 4
Once you've got a good list of possible dog training schools, start talking to people. The best place to start for this is the dog park, but if you don't have one, try local online forums. Ask people if they have heard of the dog training schools you wrote down, and if they can recommend them.
-
Step 5
Once you've narrowed it down to two or three dog training schools, go visit them. A reputable school will be more than happy to show you around and possibly observe a class. Sometimes, they will even let you bring your dog for a sample training session. Pay attention to the other clients; do they look like they're happy and having fun? Dog training can be stressful but it shouldn't be an unpleasant experience. Happy and relaxed dogs and owners indicate a pleasant learning environment. If you can, talk to the other owners before you leave. Just don't disrupt the class!
-
Step 6
If you can't find any good dog training schools, don't worry! You can always train your dog on your own. Pick up a book with great reviews from amazon.com or buy a dog training DVD.
