Train a Puppy to Use Puppy Pads

Housebreaking a new puppy may be a challenge but for those who live in apartments it can be a real hassle...

To the rescue... PUPPY PADS

If you don't have a yard and need to housebreak your puppy without taking him outside several times a day, you can use puppy training pads to housebreak your puppy

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • puppy training pads
  • housebreaking training aide spray
  • shallow cardboard box to hold the puppy pad
  • puppy crate
  • leash and collar
  • puppy
  1. Step 1

Place puppy pad inside a shallow box.
This will help define the area that your puppy must target and help him understand that this area is different than other parts of the house.

If you have an x-pen or puppy pen you can put it around the area to help him get the idea.

  2. Step 2

When you are not there to directly supervise your puppy he should be in his puppy crate. This way there are no accidents, If your breeder has done a good job of raising your puppy he should try real hard not to have an accident in his crate.

His crate should be smallish, just enough so that he can stand, turn around and lie down comfortably but no larger. This way he can not divide it into a bathroom area and a sleeping area.

  3. Step 3

When you are ready to take him out of his crate, you will immediately put him on his puppy pads and if he goes, say "go potty" "good potty" while he is doing his business.

If he does not go to the bathroom in this defined area he needs to go straight back to his crate for a while, then try again.

  4. Step 4

If he does go in his puppy potty area you can take him out, all the while giving him praise telling him what a great puppy he is for going potty in his box.

Put the leash on him and play with him for a while before putting him back into his crate.

  5. Step 5

For some puppies you may need to use a puppy housebreaking aid such as potty lure to show him that it is ok to go there.

Should he make a mistake, immediately tell him NO in a firm voice and place him into his potty area. If you have an x-pen around it you can close the door while cleaning up the mess.
Place the soiled paper towels into his puppy potty box so that he has the smell there to show him that is where he should go.

If he finishes going in the puppy pad box then you can praise him for being such a cleaver puppy and play with him for a while before putting him back into his crate.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to take him to his puppy potty pad box every 2 hours during the day whenever possible so that he will get the idea.
  • Put him in his puppy potty pad box as soon as you take him out of the crate, pick him up and carry him there, do not let him walk or he may have an accident along the way.
  • Never hit a puppy for making a mistake
  • Never let that puppy out of your sight for even one minute in the house while he is out of his crate, it only takes a second to squat and pee!
  • Never rub a puppy's nose into his accident!
