Twirl Tassels for Burlesque

You've decided to take it all off for fortune and fame, or maybe just for a little fun. Either way, you'll want to learn the classic burlesque move of tassel twirling.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spirit Gum or similar adhesive
  • Pasties with Tassels
  1. Step 1

To begin with you will need to buy or make pasties with tassels. In the resources section there is a link to a How To for making your own pasties as well as links to reputable sellers. If this is your first time twirling tassels you may want to go with a simple, but professionally made pair, as the design of your pasties can aid or hinder your ability to twirl.

  2. Step 2

Some pasties (although usually not the kind with tassels) come with adhesive backs. Most of the time, however, you'll have to find your own adhesive. Popular adhesives include spirit gum, liquid latex, toupee tape and for heavier pasties some girls I know even use carpet tape. What works for you will depend on how dry/oily your skin is, how sensitive it is (some adhesives may irritate your skin) and how heavy your pasties are. Before you strut your stuff on stage, experiment at home and see what works for you.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have your pasties and have them on, you're ready to start twirling! Getting your tassels to twirl depends on getting the pasties to move up and down just a little. The smaller your breasts are, the easier this will be--but don't worry! You can still twirl tassels if you're well endowed, it just requires a little more finesse.

  4. Step 4

Begin by putting your arms up over your head. Don't ask me why, but it really is nearly impossible to twirl with your hands down at your sides. From here, there are two basic methods which I'll outline in the next two steps.

  5. Step 5

The easiest way to get those tassels a-twirling is to do very small, very fast calf raises. As I said, twirling is all dependent on that up and down motion and this is the simplest way to achieve it. However, if you're not careful you can end up looking a bit silly just standing up on stage bouncing up and down.

  6. Step 6

The other method is significantly harder, but once you master it, is a lot less likely to make you look like you swallowed some Mexican jumping beans. For this method you want to lift and drop your chest by contracting and relaxing your upper abdominal muscles (your shoulders should not move). This movement isn't too difficult when done slowly and deliberately, but getting it up to speed, while still maintaining a rhythm will take a lot of practice.

Tips & Warnings
  • To get both tassels to twirl in the same direction put only one arm up and leave the other down, but held slightly away from your body. To reverse the direction the tassels are twirling, switch arms.
  • Practice, practice, practice! The basics of tassel twirling are pretty easy to learn, but to consistently get a good twirling each time, you'll have to practice.
  • If you decide to make your own pasties be careful about how much additional decoration you put on them. Too many rhinestones, sequins, etc., may hinder your ability to twirl.
