Many expecting mothers wish to have a midwife attend the birth of their baby. Midwives can assist women at home, at a freestanding birth center, or even at a hospital. Most women who have used a midwife typically are very pleased with the way the midwife handled the birth. However, the legal status of midwives differ from state to state, so at times it can be difficult to find a midwife. Here are some tips to help you find a midwife program in your state.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See the link in the resources section of this page to find information about the legal status chart of midwives in your state.

  2. Step 2

If your state licenses midwives, you may be able to get a list of all of the midwives in your state. Go to your state government to ask for this list.

  3. Step 3

Look in the Yellow Pages or a local health directory for advertising midwife programs. However, keep in mind that the midwife programs are paying for advertising space, and there may be others who do not advertise. Ask around the community for any mothers who have had experience with a particular midwife program. Some midwives may be so reputable that they get all of their patients without needing to advertise.

  4. Step 4

You can also try contacting your state midwifery organization. They can connect you to midwives who can attend hospital births, birthing centers, or work with an OB/GYN in a hospital setting.
