How to Install a Virtual Device Driver

A virtual device is a software application that works as an equivalent to a hardware peripheral on your computer, like installing a virtual DVD player on the hard drive. These software programs can be acquired from a number of places. Sometimes, however, the device might not work after installation because the drivers weren't installed properly. In this case, you need to perform the equivalent of a second installation in order to properly install the drivers.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the virtual device file from whatever website it comes from. Many virtual devices are available for free downloads. Upon downloading, most devices will either immediately be installed, or saved as a zip file that you must open to install.

    • 2

Search for the virtual device on your computer. Most of the time, it will be saved to your desktop. If it isn't there, right-click on "My Computer" in the Control Panel, click on "Properties," go to the "Hardware" tab, and then the Device Manager button. The device is usually in the Legacydriver category.

    • 3

Connect to the virtual device by double-clicking on its icon. If the drivers have already been installed, the application should immediately open. If it doesn't, look for a dialog box offering an option to reinstall the driver. Click on this button.

Choose the selection to install from a specific location, and check off the checkbox to "include this location." Use the "Browse" button to locate the driver for your virtual device. Continue the procedure with the "Next" button, and the click "Finish" button to complete the installation.

Look for a new virtual device on either the desktop or the Legacydriver list, and open this new icon to see if the application now works.
