Assess the extent of the damage. Small cuts are easiest to repair, and cuts that go along the line of a seam are even easier. However, for the repair to appear neat, thick, durable thread should be found in the color of the leather coat.

Sew the cut closed using a leather needle. Leather needles are heavier duty than regular needles, and they're curved to add extra power, in addition to avoiding putting the needle through the lining of a coat. For smaller cuts, where the repair won't be noticed, or for cuts along a seam, this is all that's necessary.

Sew on a patch to cover the repaired cut. The patch itself doesn't have to be leather, if you prefer, attach a symbolic patch such as one that signifies membership in a group or order. This can add character to a rougher leather jacket, such as those worn for motorcycle riding. For finer leather coats, however, patches of smoother leather should be used to cover the repair.

Repair large cuts with one of the leather repair tools on the market today. They come in a wide variety, and all of them claim to be able to seal cuts in leather, permanently, while retaining flexibility and style. The decision is ultimately up to you as the wearer of the leather coat.
