How to Install Real Player in Linux

Real Player for Linux allows to play multiple video and audio formats including MP3, WAV, MPEG, AVI, WMV and Windows media files. It has advanced options to manipulate life video streaming due to a large buffer. It provides easy tools to manage and personalize play lists. RealPlayer also supports five channel surround sound. The software is available for free download.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Superuser (root) password
  1. Step 1

    Open a Linux web browser (e.g. Mozilla), and navigate to the RealPlayer web site (see resources).

  2. Step 2

    Click on 'RPM package' under Advanced installation option.

  3. Step 3
     

    Select 'Save file,' and click OK. Make notes on the file name and the file save location. By default, the file will be saved in the Desktop directory.

  4. Step 4

    Go to the Linux Desktop. Click on the mouse right button, and choose 'open terminal' from the pop-up menu.

  5. Step 5

    Type "cd Desktop," and press ENTER. Note: If the file save location is different provide the correct path to the file i.e.
    cd /path/to/the/file

  6. Step 6

    Get superuser (root) privileges: type "su," and press ENTER. Then type root password, and press ENTER.

  7. Step 7

    Type "ls *.rpm." It will list all files with extension .rpm in the current directory. Consult notes from Step 3 and locate the file name starting with "RealPlayer."

    Type "rpm --i RealPlayer###.rpm," and press ENTER. Installation is complete.

  9. Step 9

    Type "exit" to exit root shell.

  10. Step 10

    To start Real Player, type "realplay," and press ENTER, or go to Applications > Sound & Video >RealPlayer.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you start Real Player for the first time, review release notes, accept the license agreement, and also test your Internet connection (optional) and check for updates (optional).
