Woodworking is a popular pastime all over the world. The tools used in woodworking vary in shape and size, but, they all have one thing in common; a metal blade. And, as with any other metal blade, using your woodworking tools will wear them down and make them dull. Here you will learn to sharpen your woodworking tools and make them ready to shape some wood.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Chisel
  • Leather gloves
  • Large metal file
  • Rags
  • Oil
  1. Step 1

Wearing gloves, hold your file firmly with one hand. Lay the beveled edge of the chisel onto the file and push forward as if trying to chisel the file. Start gently and increase pressure as you get a feel for the proper angle as dictated by the tool you are sharpening (in this case, a chisel).

  2. Step 2

Continue to stroke the blade of the chisel forward on the file until there are no rough edges or nicks in the working blade of the chisel.

  3. Step 3

Flip the chisel over and lay it on the file as flat as possible and pull the chisel toward you (handle first) to remove any burrs on the metal.

  4. Step 4

Hold your file over a rag and pour oil onto the newly sharpened blade. The oil will protect the metal from rust. Wipe down and store your chisel leaving a thin coat of oil on the entire blade.

Tips & Warnings
  • Working with blades can be hazardous. Use caution when working with, or sharpening, any bladed tool.
