How to Overcome Mood Swings

A mood swing is characterized as a quick and rapid change in mood. Mood swings can be caused by the hormonal changes and brain chemistry changes, especially during pregnancy, menopause, puberty and PMS. If a person has severe mood swings, she may have bipolar disorder or depression and should go to a psychiatrist for an evaluation. Although mood swings can feel daunting because it feels like the patient has no control over them, it is easy to keep mood swings at bay if you are keeping an eye out for them before they happen and try to maintain a calm state of mind.

Things You'll Need

  • Chamomile tea

    • 1

Meditate at least once a day. Meditation can relax the body and refocus the brain after a day of stress. Sit in a quiet area with no interruptions and breathe deeply. Count your breaths from one to three, then start at one again. Continue counting your breaths until you feel completely at peace, which could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

    • 2

Ask a loved one to let you know if you are switching between moods quickly. If you are able to recognize how you feel physically during these mood swings, you can learn to relax your mind and body when you feel them coming on. Relax by counting to 10 and taking deep breaths.

    • 3

Do a physical activity when you are starting to feel your mood changing. Taking a brisk walk outside or going for a run can help you focus your energy on something positive rather than feeling negative inside.

    • 4

Drink chamomile tea before bedtime. Taking just a few minutes for relaxation every night before bed can help you maintain a positive outlook and keep your mind calm.

    • 5

If you are feeling suicidal, spending frivolously, crying uncontrollably or feel completely apathetic, see a psychiatrist immediately. Your mood swings may be a symptom of a more serious medical disorder, such as bipolar disorder or depression.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your psychiatrist can prescribe a prescription medication to help curb your mood swings if necessary.
  • If you are feeling like you are going to harm yourself or others, call 911 or 1-800-SUICIDE immediately.
