How to Install a Water Heater Wrap
Hot water heaters are equipped with varying degrees of insulation. Every water heater has an R-value, which is the amount of insulation it is made with. This value should be indicated on a label. If not, touch the water heater to test the insulation; if it feels warm to the touch, it could use a water heater wrap. Wrapping your water heater can save up to 9 percent in energy costs by reducing heat loss by up to 45 percent. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine the size of your water heater. Measure the heater's diameter and height, or look for the measurements in the documentation that came with the heater. In some cases, the information is on the heater's label.
-
2
Measure and cut out space for the combustion air area--where you light the pilot on gas and oil water heaters. Cut out the area for the heater coils on electric water heaters. Check your water heater manual for the specific areas.

3
Place the wrap around the water heater and trim excess from the top. Do not let the wrap cover the top of a gas water heater. Cut slits in the insulation for the top of an electric water heater, where the pipes come out of the heater.
-
4
Secure the water heater wrap in place with tape. Most wraps come with the required tape. For added insulation, place a piece of rigid insulation under the water heater to keep the heat from being absorbed into the flooring.

Tips & Warnings
Hot water heater wraps and rigid insulation may be purchased at any hardware store. Purchase these materials during warm weather, when there is ample supply. The colder the weather, the more important it is to use a water heater wrap.
When wrapping an oil or gas operated water heater, be careful not to cover the flue on top, and make sure the water heater wrap is not near the drain at the bottom. The airflow for the burner should not be blocked. Never cover the top of the water heater. Remember that insulation is combustible and needs to be kept away from all flame sources.
