Calla lilies are a South African flower that are popular with florists and home gardeners. They have wide blooms that resemble trumpets, and grow in a wide variety of beautiful colors. Most calla lilies grow to be under 2 feet tall and make attractive additions to flower beds. Calla lilies grow well in planters and pots, and often bloom into late summer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a location to plant your calla lilies. The area should receive at least six hours of sunlight each day, as well as some afternoon shade. Select a spot where each bulb can be planted 12 to 24 inches apart.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle fertilizer onto the surface of the soil and work it into the dirt with the garden spade.

  3. Step 3

Dig a hole for each bulb that is 4 to 6 inches deep, and wide enough to accommodate the bulb.

  4. Step 4

Place each bulb into the hole, cover it with dirt and lightly pat down the soil with your hands until it is firm. Water the bulbs well.

  5. Step 5

Maintain your calla lilies. Water them often, weed the soil around the lilies and fertilize once a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • Calla lilies can also be planted in pots. Plant the bulbs 6 to 12 inches apart in pots or planters.
  • Plant calla lilies when the temperatures will not fall below 55 degrees F for three months after planting.
