Step 1
Know what electrolysis involves. During sessions, a licensed technician will insert a needle into each hair follicle. A zap of electricity will be emitted to effectively kill the follicle, disabling its ability to grow hair. Since each hair follicle must be treated individually, electrolysis can be a time-consuming process.
-
Step 2
Expect some degree of discomfort during treatment sessions. Electrolysis does involve pain. Depending on your tolerance for pain, you may find it slightly uncomfortable or downright painful. Some electrolysis machines feature small cooling fans near the needle, which helps to reduce discomfort during sessions.
-
Step 3
See an electrolysis technician for a consultation. Many providers offer free consultations, so inquire ahead of time. The technician will view your facial hair and give you an estimate on how many sessions you may need to permanently get rid of your facial hair.
-
Step 4
Stop plucking or waxing your facial hair at least 4 weeks prior to your first electrolysis treatment. You can still shave or trim your facial hair, but you must avoid any hair removal method that pulls hair out from the root.
-
Step 5
Avoid the sun while you are undergoing electrolysis treatments. Your skin will be more sensitive following treatments, and the sun's rays can damage it more easily.
-
Step 6
Examine your facial hair. If you have lots of dense, dark hair, laser hair removal may be a better hair removal option for you. Larger amounts of hair can be treated more quickly via laser hair removal. Though it isn't permanent removal, laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction, greatly improving your facial hair situation.
