How to Know If You Need Eye Glasses

Save

Knowing whether you need eyeglasses can be challenging if you do not know the signs to look for. If you have trouble seeing or difficulty focusing, it may be time to consider whether you need eyeglasses. But there are more subtle signs you may not know about that can help let you know if you need eyeglasses. Once you understand these and visit an optometrist to be diagnosed and order your glasses, you can be more comfortable reading, watching television and driving.

Things You'll Need

  • Optometrist
  • Television
  • Books

Take notice of when your eyes feel tired or if you get frequent headaches. If you have been reading or working on the computer for a long time and you experience these symptoms, you may be suffering from farsightedness, or hyperopia. It can cause blurred vision, strains and headaches when you are viewing things up close. If you experience these symptoms, visit an optometrist.

Check your night vision. See how long it takes for your eyes to recover from bright lights at night. If you see glowing halos around objects, it could be because your eyesight is not as good as it should be.

Sit on your couch and turn on a large-screen television from about 10 feet away. Flip to the news or sports channel. If you cannot read the print, scores or text running at the bottom of the screen without squinting, you may have nearsightedness. This means you have blurred vision when viewing things from a distance. This can cause headaches when your eyes are squinting to see and you crease your forehead.

Look for other physical symptoms, such as if your eyes are watering consistently, particularly one eye more than the other, which may mean this eye has more sight problems. Other symptoms include when your eyes consistently feel tired and heavy or if you are repeatedly blinking to bring something into focus. If you are over the age of 45, the crystalline lens in the eyes may have stiffened, creating focusing problems.

Go see an optometrist for an eye test. This is the most simple way to know if you need eyeglasses. Know your symptoms and share information about them with your eye doctor.
