How to Paint Your Car With House Paint

Painting a car can be fun if you know what you are doing. Instead of using traditional auto paint, however, some people prefer to paint their vehicles in unorthodox ways, such as using spray paint and, in some cases, even paint used to paint houses. Though neither house paint nor spray paint is recommended for vehicle painting purposes, it is possible to use either one to paint a vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand off the existing paint from your vehicle using an auto sander, making sure to get all the nooks and crannies of the vehicle. Once you're done sanding, you can begin making preparations for the painting portion of the job.

    • 2

Put the Kraft paper over the windows, and secure with masking tape. Don't overlap the paper or the tape onto the portions of the vehicle that you will paint. Ensure that the masking tape is not touching the body of the vehicle; secure it to the glass or the metal around the windows instead.

    • 3

Read the manufacturer's instructions on the paint gun, and fill the gun with the auto primer according to those instructions. Put on the face mask, and begin spraying the primer in long, even strokes, making sure to hold the sprayer at least 6 inches from the vehicle while spraying. Continue spraying the car in portions (i.e., hood, trunk, left fender, right fender).

    • 4

Wash out the paint gun, and allow it to dry before putting the paint in it. Allow the primer to dry before you begin painting the car. Once the primer is dry, fill the paint gun with the house paint, and follow the same instructions you followed when you applied the primer.

    • 5

Apply at least two coats of paint to the car. Remove the Kraft paper and tape from the windows, and allow the paint to dry. You can follow up the paint job with a clear coat if you wish. If you use the clear coat, follow the same steps you did for the painting process. Allow the clear coat to dry as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't expect this paint job to look like something that would be done at an auto body shop by professionals. The paint may chip off in time, because it is not meant for use on automobiles.
