Instructions

    • 1

Decide where you want to plant the camellias. Camellias usually prefer partial shade, but in climates with high humidity, such as in Florida, the plants can be grown in full sun.

    • 2

Dig a hole twice the width of the camellia's root ball, with a depth that is five inches deeper than the the height of the root ball.

    • 3

Test the pH of the soil with a soil pH meter (see Resources). Camellias prefer acidic soil conditions. An ideal pH level for camellias is 6.0. If your soil is alkaline, use an acidic fertilizer mixed in to the loose soil that was removed from the hole.

    • 4

Place the camellia plant in the hole. Fill the area around the root ball with the soil that was removed from the hole.

    • 5

Water at least every other day during the hot months of May through September. During the cooler months of September through April, watering can be done once a week or less.

    • 6

Protect the plants against rare freezing temperatures by covering them with tarps or old bedsheets.
