Instructions

    • 1

Secure the stencil printout on the plastic by taping it along the edges. Tape it securely so it won’t move as you cut the stencil. If it slips, you'll have to start over again. Maneuver the stencil so there is a 1-inch border of the plastic all around it. Place the image and plastic on thick cardboard to protect the work surface.

    • 2

Cut with the sharp craft knife. Replace the blade as necessary because a blunt tool can cause the task to take longer and may result in ragged edges on the stencil image.

    • 3

Cut smoothly, with firm pressure. Begin with the straight edges on the image. Keep your fingers on the plastic at all times to help keep it in place but keep fingers away from the knife. Cut toward yourself.

    • 4

Turn the stencil, plastic and cutting board so you are cutting in a smooth, fluid fashion. Lift the knife from the plastic as little as possible to keep lines fluid.

    • 5

Check the stencil for rough edges once you’re done cutting. Fix edges by cutting again or sanding them.
