One of the most critical elements of your job hunt is your résumé. Many job seekers agonize over the writing of their résumés and cover letters. They may invest hours reading conflicting advices from résumé books and sources on the internet, only to throw their hands up in frustration. You needn't be one of those job seekers. You can make an informed decision and hire a professional résumé writer who will craft this all important document for you.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Telephone or email
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of résumé writer to hire. A certified résumé writer (CPRW, NCRW) has earned her credentials through demonstrated proficiency. She will likely charge more than a non-certified résumé writer. A non-certified résumé writer may not have the same qualifications, but may charge significantly less to compensate.

  2. Step 2

If selecting a certified résumé writer, visit the websites for certifying bodies (see resources) to search for local providers. Obtain as much contact information as possible.

  3. Step 3

If selecting a non-certified résumé writer, search classified websites like Craigslist.org and Kijiji.com for local providers. Collect contact information.

  4. Step 4

Call or email prospective résumé writers. Ask specific questions. How long has the provider been writing résumés? Will the provider allow you to view samples? What will it cost? How long does the process take? Does the writer use templates or is every document created from scratch?

  5. Step 5

Select the writer who can best serve your needs. Be prepared to spend a little more for the best résumé. Most importantly, select a writer you feel comfortable with and get a service proposal in writing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many good résumé writers provide free critiques. Take advantage of these to see if you actually need a professional. If your résumé can be perfected with just a few tweaks, save your money.
  • If you use the advice of a résumé writer, but not her services, pay it forward by recommending her to people you know who need résumé help.
  • Don't be afraid to check up on your résumé writer. If he says he has a certification, it is perfectly okay to ask to see it or look him up on the certifying body's website.
