How to Search With Bing

Microsoft's new search engine, Bing is the thing all over the Web these days. Getting raves. Getting slack. So where do you stand in the Bing vs. Google controversy? The only way to find out is to try a little Binging yourself. Here's how to get started on your Bing journey.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • An open mind
  1. Step 1

    **Have A Balanced Perspective**

Any time one product or service dominates a market, as good as that service is, competition is necessary to keep progress steady. Appreciate this concept and that will go a long way while you learn how to Bing.

Also keep in mind the "differentiating factor." If Microsoft had attempted to reproduce another Google, only better, they would have failed. Instead Microsoft has introduced what they refer to as the "decision engine."

After extensive market research, they concluded that there was indeed a market for a simpler search engine. One that would cut through all the clutter and yield the best results. This "differentiating factor" could be what makes it or breaks it for you.

  2. Step 2

    **Evaluate Your Search Engine Style**

Take some time to evaluate how you use your search engine. Do you make it your home page? Do you rely on extra features for your daily life? Do you use it mainly for shopping online? To find images? To keep up with what's going on in the world? Get a feel of your basic search engine needs. This will help you in your final evaluation.

  3. Step 3

    **Try the Bing Thing"

Google has become a way of life for most Internet users--a household word. So this step may be a bit of a challenge. But here it is: Make Bing your default browser for 3 days. Get a feel for Bing. It's the underdog so it needs to gain some favor to get a word in edgewise. Try to give it.

  4. Step 4

    **Compare**

Make a list of search keywords and then search for the same phrase in both Google and Bing. Make a list either on paper or just in your mind of the differences.

  5. Step 5

    **Is Bing Your Thing?**

After steps 1-4, you're safe to go with your gut instinct. Is Bing your thing? Maybe part of your thing? Maybe only for images or shopping? Take note and congratulate yourself that you know now if Bing's your thing.
