Step 1
Cheap Wireless Routers are perfectly fine to use in your home or apartment. You can use them to build or extend your network. The best cheap router, in my opinion, is the D-Link 524 802.11G. This is a mainstream router that is used in a lot of homes and small businesses. This router costs less than $20 and can be found practically anywhere.

Step 2
If you are looking for the best router under $50, I would have to say from my experience that the Linksys WRT54G2 router is the best. It supports 802.11G but not 802.11N. 802.11N is a new wireless standard but most laptops cannot use 802.11N themselves so this is not a big deal.

Step 3
A good, cheap wireless router will usually be sufficient for the average user. If you just need a basic network or wireless, do not spend hundreds of dollars on a router. Those types of routers are meant for businesses and usually include hard to use firewalls and extra features that the average user will not use.
