Cleaning your bird’s cage and toys may sound like a no-brainer, but there are things people don’t think of. Read this article to make sure you’re cleaning your bird items properly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • newspaper
  • water
  • sponge
  • vinegar
  1. Step 1

Move the bird. If your bird behaves well, you can just set it somewhere to play. If not, you may want to have a spare cage to keep your bird in while you clean the main cage. The holding cage can be small, as the bird won’t be in it for long.

  2. Step 2

Remove all toys, perches and dishes from the cage.

  3. Step 3

You cage should have a removable tray in the bottom. Clean this first. Use hot water and a scrub sponge to remove all feces. Dry it well and replace the newspaper. Do not use cob or shredded litter; they are not good for your pet.

  4. Step 4

Clean the rest of the cage with a mix of hot water and a little vinegar. Do not use soap! Birds chew a lot, and use their mouths to aid climbing. Soap is toxic. Be sure you scrub off all feces, and clean every surface. Allow to air dry or towel off.

  5. Step 5

Clean all toys and perches with hot water and a little vinegar. If the toy has rope parts or other bits that will absorb liquid, blow dry them after cleaning so they don’t get musty. Replace perch covers as needed.

  6. Step 6

Clean dishes with plain hot water. If the food or water dishes have angled corners, use a toothbrush to scrub out any build-up. Scald the brush after, and keep it only for this use. Never use it for anything else.

  7. Step 7

Reassemble the cage, replace all items, and put your bird back inside.

  8. Step 8

Be sure you don’t forget to clean toys and perches that are kept outside the cage.

  9. Step 9

While you’re cleaning, inspect toys for damage, and remove or replace them if needed.

  10. Step 10

Clean the tray of the cage no less than once a week, dishes daily, and the whole cage at least once a month.
