Step 1
GENERAL CONTRACTOR'S LICENSE - Contact your local county offices to find out how to apply for a contractors license. Most likely you will need to take some classes, study and take a test. You will also need to pay all applicable fees to get your contractors license. You may even be required to work under a general contractor for a certain period of time. This is the key element in starting your own construction company.
-
Step 2
LOCAL CRITERIA - Obtain all local requirements such as a business license, fictitious business name statement, bank account and any other local requirement.
-
Step 3
SUPPLIES - Order a phone just for your business and business cards. These two items are crucial for your business. You cannot afford to miss a call. Treat all customers and potential customers as professional as possible.
-
Step 4
TOOLS - Buy the minimum amount of tools you need to get started. You can buy more tools as you can afford them or even borrow some if needed.
-
Step 5
INSURANCE - Obtain an insurance policy for your new business. You should be bonded and insured before beginning work on any property. Insurance is very important in this industry. Talk with your insurance sales man to make sure that you have adequate coverage.
-
Step 6
ADVERTISE - Advertise in your local newspaper to get your first business. Once your business starts you will find more and more work from referrals. Your new construction business will be up and running before you know it.
-
Step 7
WEBSITE - Build your own website to give yourself an online presence. Even if it is simple, it should be very professional and at least give basic contact information.
