You've trained your dog to bark on command, or maybe your dog just naturally loves to bark. Either way, barking can be a detrimental behavior if it is out of control. Here are a few simple steps you can try to teach your dog the command to stop barking.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small Training Treats
  1. Step 1

Once your dog is barking, get her attention, sit her down in front of you, show her the treat, and give her the command. Use "quiet" or "no noise" or whatever works for you.

  2. Step 2

Once she sees the treat, she may stop just to think for a second, or she may bark even more. As soon as she pauses, give her lots of praise and a treat.

  3. Step 3

If he starts barking again, repeat the process, but every time he stops barking, make him wait a little bit longer before getting the treat.

  4. Step 4

Eventually, she will remain silent when you give her the "quiet!" command. At this point, give her the command to bark, and give her a treat.

  5. Step 5

Alternate back and forth between "bark!" and "quiet!" until your dog is comfortable with both commands. Don't forget to give lots of praise!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient, and if your dog gets bored or distracted stop for the day. If you try to keep going, he'll only get frustrated.
  • Dog training can be fun for both you and your dog if you make it exciting!
  • Always end dog training sessions on a good note, with lots of praise and a treat, even if she didn't quite figure out what you wanted.
  • Use tons of praise! It's healthier than treats, and your dog will often appreciate it more and your training will go more smoothly.
  • If you haven't taught your dog to bark on command, see my article in dog training on "How to Teach Your Dog Basic Obedience: Bark Command," in the reference section.
  • Don't fall into the trap of rewarding behavior that isn't what you asked for. Sometimes your dog might do something "cute" and you'll be tempted to give him a treat. Don't do it unless you want to derail your dog's training session; rewarding the wrong behavior will only confuse him.
