Step 1
Find out if you can purchase a pet monkey at all. Certain states have restrictions on owning a monkey as a pet. You might need special permits or you may not be allowed to own a monkey at all. Be sure to check out restrictions in your state and local area.
-
Step 2
Tell your landlord -
If you are renting a house, you need to make sure your landlord doesn't mind you having pets. Read the lease carefully and determine if pets are allowed. Talk to a lawyer or your landlord if you are unsure. -
Step 3
Make sure you have lots of money to purchase a pet monkey -
Pet monkeys can be very expensive to buy as they are not your typical pet. You want to buy from a certified dealer or monkey farm and not just anyone, so don't expect to get off cheap. -
Step 4
Save up money for vet bills -
Monkeys can get sick often, so make sure you have enough money saved up to pay for a vet to treat him. -
Step 5
Get a nice yard for your monkey to play in -
You must have an outdoor area that is large and suitable for a monkey to play in. Pet monkeys like trees and climbing, so be sure to build up your outdoor areas with accessories for your new pet's enjoyment. -
Step 6
Get ready for a mess -
Before you purchase a pet monkey, make sure you are ready for the mess he will make. Monkeys are generally very active and can wreck things in your house very easily. Make sure to clear valuables and breakables out of the way before you bring your monkey home. -
Step 7
Warn your friends and family -
Because monkeys are messy and wild, you should discuss getting a monkey with children and anyone else who is normally in your house. Make sure to get everyone's input before purchasing. Just because one child wants a monkey doesn't mean other children should be scared to leave their room.

on 9/2/2009 Great info, I typically discourage anyone from purchasing or adopting exotics as pets, once informed if they are still adamant, then they may be prepared for the responsibility, but they may not. My friend does monkey rescue and we are in a state where permits are nearly impossible to get, she does the lesser monkeys but had a Chimp for a little while, when they were trying to find suitable placement for him.... perhaps you have heard of him... his name was Moe
