Removing dry paint from a surface can be a daunting task. Whether you are trying to strip down a family heirloom or remove paint spots off of hardwood floors, purchasing the right products you will help you get the job done quickly and with ease. You can find a variety of paint removing products at local hardware stores to help you complete your project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint remover
  • Trowel
  • Cloth
  1. Step 1

Purchase a paint remover. There are many types available, including thinner, stripper, gel and sprays. To remove paint from trim or furniture, choose a more abrasive product, such as Citristrip stripping gel. For cleaning up overspray or drips, use less harsh cleaners such as Goo Gone.

  2. Step 2

Apply the paint removing product. Follow the instructions on the packaging of your paint remover to prepare your work area. When using harsh removers, lay down newspaper and work in a well-ventilated area. Spread the product over the surface.

  3. Step 3

Remove the paint. Once the product has set according to the packaging instructions, use a trowel and run it over the surface of the paint. The paint should be loosened and should easily release from the area you have treated. When removing dry paint drips or overspray, apply the cleaner to a cloth and scrub away the dry paint.

  4. Step 4

Clean the area. Once the paint is removed, rinse the work area with water and let it dry completely before refinishing. When removing drips or overspray, let the area dry and then retreat it with your usual surface cleaners to achieve the desired finish.
