How to Replace an RCA Plug

Replace RCA plugs quickly with wire cutters and a soldering iron.

Replacing an RCA plug is moderately easy. It takes only a few minutes, using household tools, to get your electrical appliance up and running again.

Things You'll Need

• Wire cutters
• Wire stripper
• RCA replacement plugs
• Electrician's tape

Instructions

1. Cut off the old plug with wire cutters.

2. Use wire strippers to peel off about 1/2 inch of insulation from both wires.

3. Remove the sheath from the new plug, and slip it over the wires of the old plug.

4. Connect the two wires to the color-coded connectors on the new plug.

5. Apply a drop of solder with a soldering iron to secure the new connections.

6. Slide the sheath over the wire connection to the new plug, and snap into place.

7. Replace a plug with wires already attached by stripping 1/2 inch of insulation off the wires of the new plug.

8. Connect the wires of the new plug to the wires where the old plug was removed, and twist each corresponding wire together 3 to 4 times around its mate on the old wire set.

9. Apply a drop of solder over each wire splice.

10. Wrap the spliced wires tightly with black, elasticized electrician's tape.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't leave any bare wire exposed when replacing the plug, as this could cause a short in the equipment.

• Use caution when working with a hot soldering iron, which can cause a nasty burn.
