How to Design a Door Hanger

Door hangers are often created for advertisements, but they can also be used as "Do not disturb" signs or other signage. They can name a person's room or display someone's schedule. All can be customized and personalized to your liking.

• A digital art program such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop

1. 

   Either draw freehand or download a door hanger template. You can get a free template at http://kids.creativity-portal.com/d/projects/door.hanger/blank-door-hanger-templates.shtml. Open your template in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator software. Choose your color and drop it into your template.

2. 

   Add the text you need for your door hanger. Select a font that works with your design. For example, if you need an elegant look, use an stylish font such as Edwardian Script. If you are trying to create an eye catching ad, use a clearly legible font that can be read from far away, such as Arial Black or Helvetica Bold.

3. 

   Add images or a decorative ornament to create visual interest to your door hanger. If you are using Photoshop, you can copy and paste a scanned photograph or web image. If you are working in Illustrator, you can use a font that uses images instead of letters, such as Bodoni Ornaments. Also try your hand at drawing an icon with the Illustrator shape and pen tools.

4. Print out the door hanger on thick paper stock, cut a hole for the door handle and you're ready to display.

Tips & Warnings

• After printing the door hanger, additional decorations can be added by hand by using embellishments found in craft stores. Ribbons, stickers, buttons and rub-on transfers will add visual appeal to your door hanger, especially if used as an advertisement.
