Instructions

    • 1

Plant moonflower bulbs or seeds in peat pots inside in an area that gets full sunlight. Put the bulb with the round bottom at the bottom. If using seeds, sand the seed with sandpaper before planting to aid germination. Water the pots at least once a week to maintain moist conditions.

    • 2

Prepare a well-drained plot of land that gets full sun for planting moonflowers by adding a bit of rich compost soil to the land. Dig holes about six inches apart and about three-quarters of an inch deep. Once all threat of frost is past, place the peat pots with the moon flower bulbs or seeds directly into the ground. Water the area well.

    • 3

Once the moonflower seedlings are visible, place some mulch chips in the garden bed to help maintain moisture and to minimize weed growth. Weed regularly to remove weeds that may sap the water needed for the moonflowers to grow.

    • 4

Add tall stakes to the flower beds to give the moonflower tendrils something to grab onto. The moonflower may grow up to 10 to 15 feet high, so pick stakes that will provide adequate support for the vines.

    • 5

Pluck out overgrowth of flowers if the flowerbed is crowded. Keep the flowers watered adequately and check the bed regularly for weeds that need to be removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • The moon flower will open around sunset as the light dims. This plant will strongly reseed each year.

  • The moonflower will drop many seeds, so plant in an area where spreading of this flower is acceptable.
