Arrange Flowers in a Basket

There is nothing like having a fresh cut bunch of beautiful flowers in your home. Flowers seem to brighten the spirits and bring a wonderful fragrance into the home. Baskets of all types are readily available and make great containers for flowers. The flowers can be formally arranged or just placed in the basket for a more casual look. This is a fun project that anyone can accomplish in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basket
  • Scissors
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Double-sided tape or glue dots
  • Floral foam
  • Fresh flowers
  • Fresh greens
  • Baby's breath
  • Ribbon
  1. Step 1

Cut a piece of plastic to fit inside the basket and up the sides. Use double sided tape to hold it in place just below the rim of the basket. You can use glue dots if you don't have double sided tape. Tape down the pleats, too.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of floral foam to fit inside and almost fill the basket and then soak it in some cool water until it turns dark green.

  3. Step 3

Decide where you are going to place the arrangement. If it will be up against a wall or in a window, place the taller flowers on one side, toward the outside. If it will be on a table or where you will view all sides of the arrangement, place the taller flowers in the center.

  4. Step 4

Start by arranging short greenery around the outside of the basket. Use some greens that will hang over the basket and drape down for a dramatic effect. Push the stems into the floral foam to hold them in place.

  5. Step 5

Place taller flowers either in the center or to the back of the basket. They can also come around the sides about one-third of the way.

  6. Step 6

Work your way down from the tall flowers, with progressively shorter flowers, until the shortest flowers are at the front of the basket or around the outside, just inside the greenery.

  7. Step 7

Place a filler, such as baby's breath, if you need to fill in areas between flowers. You can cut the stems to make the baby's breath the height that you need them, from long to short.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fill a flat or slightly rounded basket by cutting long-stemmed flowers and tying them together with a pretty ribbon and they laying them down in the basket. They won't last as long as using floral foam for moisture, but they look beautiful.
