Options for the TomTom auto GPS

An auto GPS (Global Positioning System) is a device that uses location information from satellites to guide your car to a specified destination through visual and spoken directions. An auto GPS can cost from $150 for portable versions to $1,500 for models built into your car. Though these procedures apply to all GPS units in general, the specifics are for the TomTom ONE.

Instructions

    • 1
      Current position

Whenever possible, turn on your GPS a few minutes before you need it. This gives it time to determine its current position by locating satellites.

    • 2
      Day colors

Tap the screen to display the options window and then choose the "Preferences" button. Choose either day or night colors to display a screen suitable for the current time of day. Click the "Done" button. The GPS colors will change to match your selection.

    • 3
      Volume control

Tap the screen to display the volume control. Turn the volume up so you can hear the voice instructions over traffic noise. If it is available, use the option that automatically increases the volume as you speed up.

    • 4
      Navigate options

Tap your screen to display the options window and then choose the "Navigate" button, "Address" and then "Street and House Number" to specify a destination address.

    • 5
      City

Enter the address of the destination you want in this order: city and state, street name and street number. The GPS calculates the route from your current location to your destination. You can bypass this step by storing this address as a favorite, as explained in the next section.

    • 6
      Text route

Browse the route in either map or text form to ensure that it is correct. If needed, adjust the route to take or avoid streets and highways. Press the "Accept" button when everything is acceptable.

    • 7

Follow the directions spoken by the GPS as it guides you through the route.

    • 8

When you reach your destination, turn your GPS off. To prevent theft, take your GPS with you or store it out of sight.

    Adding favorites

    • 9
      Favorite options

Tap your screen to display the options window and then choose the "Add Favorites" button, "Address," and then "Street and House Number" to specify a favorite address.

    • 10
      Favorite name

Enter the city and state, street name and street number. Then, enter a name for this favorite, such as "grocery store."

    • 11

Click the "Done" button to add the name to your favorites list.

    • 12
      "Favorites" list

To use this addition as a destination, choose the "Navigate" button and then "Favorites" to display the "Favorites" list. Scroll through it and select the addition. Your GPS calculates a route to that selection.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a portable GPS, install it near the driver's side windshield in an area that does not block your view of the road. Use an area just below your line of sight, close to the dashboard.

  • Never try to program your GPS while driving. Instead, pull over to a safe location before handling the device.
