How to Make Church Choir Rehearsal Rulesthumbnail
Church Choir

Church choir rehearsal rules provide a much needed foundation for a productive rehearsal which will result in an amazing God glorifying performance.

Many times people shy away from strict or formal rules for a church choir rehearsal, feeling afraid to step on anyone's toes.

While choir is a social event for many people, it is very clearly a way to get closer to the Lord for everyone. Rules will support your choir to touch more people in the congregation through music and to praise God with an amazing performance.

Consider using these church choir rehearsal rules with prayer to better organize your performance.

    Instructions

      • 1
        Formality Level

CONSIDER FORMALITY LEVEL OF CHOIR REHEARSAL - Before deciding upon church choir rehearsal rules for your team, it is imperative that you analyze the unique dynamic of your choir.

Rules will differ dramatically due to the size, age and personality of your choir. Certain groups will need more structure, while others will just need mission statements or overviews and a few set rules.

Choose rules that you can stick to and be consistent with for your group.

        Love & Respect

RESPECT YOUR CHOIR - Before choosing your rehearsal rules, you want to think about why most of the members are in choir. If it is fellowship time for many members, consider having basic rules, but also breaks for socialization, work, hard, break etc. Do not implement "no talking" rules if the purpose for many is fellowship.

Also, choose rules which will enable members to respect each other. Always implement rules in a respectful and loving way.

        Rules

CHOOSE YOUR RULES - This section will include a list of possible church choir rehearsal rules. Choose rules which are appropriate for your choir and address problem areas.

        - Attendance: No Practice/No Play is a very common rule. Make sure this is a rule that you will be able to enforce. If your choir is very small and you need them, you may not want to make this rule. Consider if there is an exception clause (if the person knows the song back/forth or if they give a certain amount of notice).

        - Punctuality: Being on time is important in respecting the other choir members and the rehearsal in general. Make it a rule to contact the leaders if a person will be late, if they are late a certain number of times they cannot play.

        - ORGANIZATION: Every member must have accordion style organization. Must have a binder for Sunday's performance. You choose what organization is required, or if required at all.

        - SICK: If your sick, don't sing - save that beautiful voice. :)

        - PLANNING: You may wish to have rules considering planning in advance, coming to rehearsal prepared. Consider an online planning service (see resources section below) and put each member in charge of printing sheets before coming to practice. Also consider asking members to have already learned/practiced their part before coming to rehearsal.

        - DRESS CODE: For some choirs, dress code is an issue, for others it is not, but you may still want to make a note to put one in there. Just making sure it is modest and representative of the church.

        - COMMITMENT: Will you require choir members to attend a certain amount of services a week, go to a Bible study or be a "member" of your church? That is up to you.

        Copy Rules

DISTRIBUTE - Once creating the church choir rehearsal rules, it is time to distribute them. Make sure to talk to the choir about them, give them a sheet and consider keeping them posted.
