Making a 2-in1 skirt, or a convertible skirt, is an easy and versatile wardrobe addition. A 2-in-1 skirt can be worn as a skirt or a dress or, in some cases, as a skirt or a top, depending upon the length. Only a few easy seams are required to create a 2-in-1 skirt and you can sew it in the afternoon and wear it out that evening. These are great pieces for traveling---wear your skirt with a top during the day and as a dress in the evening with a lightweight wrap to save space in your luggage.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Draft your pattern. You will need your bust, hip and waist measurements, as well as a desired length. To make a maxi 2-in-1 skirt, use your waist-to-ankle measurement for the skirt panels. Cut each skirt panel your hip measurement, plus 4 to 6 inches. Cut the waistband or bandeau panel 2 to 3 inches smaller than your bust measurement. This will fold over to form a low-rise waistband. Make your waist piece approximately 16 to 20 inches long by this measurement. Choose a good quality jersey fabric with a significant amount of stretch, yardage depends on size, length and desired fullness.

  2. Step 2

Stitch a center-back seam in the waistband piece of your convertible dress using a stretch stitch or three-step zigzag stitch. Use ballpoint needles to sew the jersey, as they do not split the fabric. Fold in half, with the wrong sides together. Try on, both at your low waist and bust. Adjust fit if necessary.

  3. Step 3

Sew the front and back 2-in-1 skirt panels together, with right sides facing.

  4. Step 4

Pin the raw edge of the doubled waistband piece to the right side of the convertible skirt. Sew securely into place. Press this seam down toward the skirt and topstitch.

  5. Step 5

Trim and even the skirt hem, if needed. Jersey fabrics do not ravel, so hemming the skirt is not necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add a casing for 1 1/2-inch non-roll elastic at the top edge for a more secure fit. This may be sewn with a serger.
