How to Calculate the Area of a Swimming Pool
Planning how to use and care for your pool probably requires in-depth knowledge of your pool's various attributes. Knowing your pool's area can help you calculate what kind of pool cover you may need or even determine the amount of fencing that may be required. Determining a pool's area does not require a great deal of math--just a few measurements and some multiplication. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Evaluate your pool's shape. While most pools are rectangular, many other shapes exist. Determining what shape your pool is will decide what formula is needed to calculate its area.
-
2
Determine the types of measurements you will need. The formula for calculating your pool's area requires different measurements depending upon the shape. If your pool is circular, you only need one measurement: the distance from the pool's center to its edge. If the pool is an oval, then you will need the distance from the center to the closest edge and the distance from the center to the furthest edge. The following steps will assume your pool is the typical rectangular shape, which will require two measurements.

3
Take a measurement of the pool's length. Use your measuring tape and run it down one side of the pool. Make sure the tape is perfectly parallel to the pool's edge. Write down the measurement.
-
4
Take a measurement of the pool's width. Start at a corner then measure from that corner to the nearest corner. Write down this measurement as your pool's width.
-
5
Multiply the first measurement by the second. Multiplying the width by the length will produce a number that will indicate your pool's area. If you performed the measurements in inches but desire to know feet, then first divide your width and length measurements by twelve before multiplying them together.
