Azureus is a BitTorrent client typically used for peer-to-peer file sharing. Renamed Vuze several years after its release in 2003, Azureus is a powerful and free program for organized downloading. In addition to the downloading of content, Azureus is also useful for its ability to watch and share media directly within the interface, through a system of channels suited to a variety of genres and tastes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  1. Step 1

Download the Azureus client appropriate to your version of Mac OS X. The download should only take a few moments. Make sure your Internet connection can use Java, since the program runs in Java.

  2. Step 2

Install the Azureus program. Open the file that was downloaded. A disk image will appear on your desktop. Open the disk image and drag the application image into your applications folder. Then eject the disk image by dragging it to the trash. Your Azureus program is now installed.

  3. Step 3

Set the sharing and download settings. BitTorrent works on the expectation that you will provide your materials as "seeds" for uploads. Other users will "leech" off your content.

  4. Step 4

Download torrent files ("seeds"). There are a variety of sites that provide torrent files, with everything from old television shows to independent music. Downloaded seeds will appear on your desktop or a download file you've designated.

  5. Step 5

Drag and drop torrent files into Azureus. They will appear on Azureus' download queue, which will automatically begin seeking out other users with that seed from which to leech.

  6. Step 6

Move a copy to your shared folder to serve as an additional seed for later leechers. Your downloaded file is now complete, but as part of the BitTorrent community it is only proper that you share the file just downloaded.
