Make Godzilla's Spine

1. Measure and draw the Godzilla costume pattern

Measure the hooded sweatshirt straight down from the front center edge of the hood to the back center edge of the sweatshirt bottom. Measure a sheet of newspaper to be the same length and draw jagged 3-inch spines on the paper to create a pattern. Cut out the pattern and place it on the green felt.

2. Pin and cut the felt

Pin the pattern to the felt. Cut the felt along the edges of the pattern. If you need to cut the spines in sections, add 1 inch to the overall length of the cut spines.

3. Pin the spines to the sweatshirt

Pin the felt spine pieces to the sweatshirt, starting at the top of the center front edge of the hood. Pin the spines all the way down the center of the back of the hood and the length of the back of the sweatshirt. Overlap sections 1 inch. Sew the spine to the sweatshirt using small stitches.

Tip

Felt does not fray when cut, so overlapping sections will work for this project. Study a few pictures of Godzilla to determine the placement of the spines, teeth and eyes.

Get together with some other monster fans and dress up your kids for a group costume. In addition to your own Godzilla King of the Monsters, companion cosplay costumes can include such famous kaiju personalities as Mothra, Rodan, King Kong and Mechagodzilla. Have them carry monster, dragon and Godzilla toys. Everyone can pretend they have atomic breath.
