1
Create an inspiration board. Look through magazines, websites and catalogs and cut out anything you see that you like. This can include styles, colors and details (such as beading and trim). Go to local fabric stores and collect swatches of colors and fabric that strike you. Once you have all of your inspirations, mount them on a piece of poster board so all of your ideas are in one place.

2
Choose a color. If you haven't decided on wedding colors yet, now is the time. Think about your favorite colors or the season in which you are getting married. Your bridesmaid's dresses should either match or complement your wedding colors. You will most likely be wearing white so this is your chance to add a bit of color to your wedding party.

3
Choose a silhouette. Think about where you will be getting married and when. If you are getting married in January in Maine, you probably want to avoid a mini-dress. Also, consider the level of formality. The more formal the wedding, the longer you will want the dress to be. Last, keep in mind who you have selected as your bridesmaids. Even though it is your day, be sure you select a silhouette your bridesmaids will feel comfortable in no matter what their body type.

4
Choose a neckline. There are many options to choose from, such as sweetheart or portrait. The neckline will change depending on your look. Some necklines are considered classical while others are considered contemporary. Look at the various necklines in conjunction with your wedding dress neckline to see what complements it the best.
-
5
Choose a sleeve length. Cap sleeves can be a soft romantic touch; long sleeves can create nice clean lines. Think about what sleeve looks best with the silhouette and length you have chosen.
-
6
Choose a fabric. Fabric is often the forgotten step, but it is just as important as any of the others. Pick a fabric that complements your wedding dress and the weather. Lighter fabrics for the summer; heavier fabrics for the fall and winter.
-
7
Put the pieces together. Sketch a complete garment using all of the details you have chosen (color, silhouette, neckline, sleeve length and fabric). Once your sketch is done, attach a swatch of the fabric in your chosen fabric.

8
Have the dresses made. Once you have a coherent sketch, take it and your inspiration board to a seamstress or designer. Explain to them what you want, and they can create it for you. They may even be able to offer suggestions you didn't think of.

Tips & Warnings
Unless you are an experienced seamstress, don't construct the dresses yourself. A professional seamstress will be able to take your bridesmaid's measurements and create dresses that fit them perfectly and are well constructed.
