Things You'll Need:
- Bucket
- Wire brush
- Bleach
- Rag
- WD-40
- Paper towel
-
Step 1
Fill a bucket with water and allow the pruners to soak for several minutes. Scrub the blades of the pruners with a wire brush until all visible debris is removed.
-
Step 2
Dip the blades into the bucket often during this process to rinse away loosened material. Empty the bucket of water, and refill with a mixture of one part bleach to 10 parts water.
-
Step 3
Soak the pruners in the bleach solution for several minutes, and then wipe the blades down thoroughly with a clean rag. The bleach will kill any viruses or plant diseases that may have infected the pruners and will prevent them from spreading to other plants.
-
Step 4
Spray a coat of WD-40 over the blades of the pruners following the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the coat covers all of the working parts of the shears. This will prevent rust from forming and keep it cutting smoothly.
-
Step 5
Wipe the WD-40 off with a paper towel, but do not rinse. Allow a thin layer of WD-40 to remain on the pruners to help lubricate and provide future protection.
