How to Change a Windows XP Start Bar Color

Windows XP has a variety of options to help you customize the appearance of your desktop. For most users, changing the Start Bar color is simply for cosmetic reasons; they prefer one color over another. For other users, such as those with poor eyesight, a different colored Start Bar helps them to better read and distinguish between program icons found in the Navigation tray.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click the desktop and choose "Properties."

    • 2

      Select the "Appearance" tab.

    • 3

Choose a color from the "Color Scheme" drop down menu. You have a choice between blue, which is listed as Default, olive green and silver.

    • 4

Press "Apply" to make your changes.

    • 5

Click "Ok" to exit the menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • No matter which color you choose, the Start button will remain the same color. There is no option to change the Start button.
