A screw-back earring features a clasp mechanism that allows you to adjust the fit of the earring by rotating the earring's backing. Styles of clip-on antique earrings and post earrings are also available in the screw-back style. This system not only ensures comfort, but also makes it more difficult for the earring to loosen unintentionally. To get the most out of your jewelry, familiarize yourself with the proper technique for removing screw-back earrings.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the front of an antique screw-back clip-on earring between the thumb and index finger of your nondominant hand.

  2. Step 2

Hold the backing between the thumb and index finger of your dominant hand. Unscrew the backing by rotating it to the left.

  3. Step 3

Gently pull downward on the earring to release it from your earlobe.

  4. Step 4

Rotate the backing of a screw-back post earring to the left to move it toward the end of the ridged post, until the backing slides off the post and into your hand.

Tips & Warnings
  • Screw-back post earrings, which are less likely to fall out and get lost than other styles, are ideal for wearing while exercising or playing sports.
