A helmet is worn when playing football to ensure that the players avoid head injury as much as possible. And with all of the bumps, bruises and collisions of football, it is sometimes necessary to repaint your helmet to give it that fresh game-day look. Here, learn how to use spray paint to give your helmet a new coat of paint.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spray paint (in your favorite team colors)
  • New decals
  • Razor knife
  • Dust mask
  • Leather gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Rough sandpaper
  • Old bedsheet
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Heavy craft paper
  • Painter's tape
  1. Step 1

Lay out all of your supplies outdoors on the bedsheet. Use the wrench to remove the face guard, and set it aside. Cover the inside of your helmet with craft paper and tape the edges with painter's tape.

  2. Step 2

Use your razor knife to gently lift the edges of any decals still on the outer part of the helmet. Be sure to note the location and angle of the decals so that you can replace them properly. Discard all of the old decals after you've removed them.

  3. Step 3

Sand the outside of your helmet with rough sandpaper to even out any deep gouges and to ruff up the surface so that the paint will stick. Wipe away any excess dust and debris with a clean corner of the sheet.

  4. Step 4

Hold your spray can 8 to 12 inches from the surface of the helmet. Press the button and move the can from side to side while painting with short blasts. Coat the entire helmet with a light coat of paint. Allow this first coat to dry for one hour.

  5. Step 5

Coat the helmet with a second coat of paint. Use short blasts and move the can smoothly from side to side. Allow this coat to dry overnight.

  6. Step 6

Apply new decals to your helmet. Remove the backing and lay one end onto the helmet and slowly spread the entire decal on to the surface. Remember to use the same placement as that of the old decals. Remove the tape and paper from the inside of the helmet. Replace the face guard. Strap on the helmet and play some football.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spray paint poses an inhalation hazard. Always use the spray either outside or in a well-ventilated room. Always wear face protection, such as a dust mask or respirator, as well as gloves and eye protection, when spraying.
