Shimano reels are widely considered to be among the finest fishing reels available on the market today. Ranging in price from the affordable to high-end models costing upward of several hundred dollars, there is a quality reel to fit most every need and budget. Shimano reels are available at many sporting good retailers as well as online retailers. Choosing a reel is a matter of price, use and personal preference.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine which type of Shimano reel is needed. Decide if a spinning or bait-casting reel will be used and whether the reel will be used for fresh or salt water fishing.

  2. Step 2

Consider the species and size of fish to be caught. Shimano reels are available based on the size line to be used. Different diameter lines are used for different fish species. Typically, larger fish will require larger diameter line of a higher test strength. Larger fish may also require more line. The result will be the need for a larger sized reel to accommodate both diameter and length of line.

  3. Step 3

Take into consideration the price of the reel. For example, if you will be using the reel on a regular basis, a reel costing a hundred dollars or more is reasonable. If only occasional fishing will be done, perhaps a lower priced reel will suffice.

  4. Step 4

Look at the features of different Shimano reels. For example, some Shimano spinning reels feature an anti-twist mechanism that helps prevent line twist while retrieving line. There are also corrosion-resistant features available on all Shimanos, which will have an impact on the overall price.

  5. Step 5

Visit a retailer that carries a variety of Shimano reels and try them out. Holding a reel and feeling the difference between three and eight ball bearings while turning the handle is the only way to truly get a true feel for what you may want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind that frequent use will result in wear and tear on a reel. Higher-priced reels will typically feature more durable and longer lasting parts and materials.
  • Take your time when considering the purchase of a reel. There are many fine reels made by Shimano. Often times, there is a price point difference of $30 to $50 between models; however, the features and quality also typically goes up.
