How to Run a Conduit for New Construction
-
1
Determine your wiring needs and conduit locations. Once your new home's walls are framed, review the layout and determine where you will need to run low voltage cabling. This can include cable lines, power cords that need to remain hidden (i.e. for a mounted TV.), security wiring and other needs. Mark the nearest framed stud with a red dot to indicate where you want electronic devices.
-
2
Attach the conduit piping, using the brackets and screws, to the framed studs near your desired locations. Make sure to attach a conduit piece long enough so that the tube can be brought to the face of the new wall in the start and finish ends. A bracket should be used for every 3 feet of conduit.

3
Drywall your wall and cut a rough opening (about the size of the conduit opening) using a precision saw in the drywall where the conduit is located. When you are installing the drywall keep track of where the conduit is located by placing a mark in the approximate area on the drywall. Once you cut your opening, reach in and pull the conduit so that it lines up with the opening.
-
4
Complete your wall. Tape and paint the drywall around the conduit. You can stuff newspaper into the conduit's openings so that paint and tape do not accidently spill into the conduit. Although the opening of the conduit may look rough, it will be concealed by a cover plate in the finished product.

5
Install a cover plate over your drywall to finish the installation. The cover plate will conceal the hole and give a polished look. If you need to install equipment using the conduit, either install the equipment directly over the conduit's opening and run cords behind or install a cover plate with a pass through hole for the cords.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to anticipate future electronic needs when installing conduits. Just because you do not currently have a need for the conduit, you may soon develop one.
