How to Knit Yarn Over a Needle

Yarn over is one of the most common knitting increases. The yarn over adds a stitch to your needle and also creates a lacy hole in your knitting. Yarn over a needle is also a frequently used lace-knitting stitch. There are several ways to make a yarn over, and the right method may depend upon how you knit, the stitch following and your own preferences.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Knit to the yarn over in your knitting pattern. Bring the yarn to the front of your work, between the needles. Knit the next stitch in your pattern as noted or charted. When you knit the next stitch, you will automatically move the yarn over your knitting needle and to the back of the work, creating the yarn over.

  2. Step 2

Work a yarn over before a purl stitch somewhat differently. Bring the yarn to the front of the work if your previous stitch was a knit stitch. If the previous stitch was a purl stitch, the yarn will already be at the front of the work. Wrap the yarn front to back over the needle and back to the front of your work before purling the next stitch. This will create your yarn over.

  3. Step 3

Make a yarn over, or YO, at the beginning of a knit row by bringing your yarn to the front of the work before making your first knit stitch. Insert your needle into the first stitch and wrap front to back before knitting the first stitch on the left-hand needle.

  4. Step 4

Make a loop around your right-hand needle to make a yarn over the needle before your first stitch on a purl row. The yarn should be at the front of your knitting and ready for you to make your first purl stitch after creating the loop for your YO.

  5. Step 5

Create multiple yarn overs by wrapping the yarn around the needle, as you would for a yarn over before a purl stitch. End as appropriate, whether your next stitch is a knit stitch or a purl stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Yarn overs may also be called yarn forward before a knit stitch. Pattern notations prior to a purl stitch, especially in older patterns, may include wool or yarn round needle.
