If you are using paper napkins and paper towels, you are probably wasting a lot of money and generating a lot of unnecessary trash.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Save money with cloth napkins.
    Save money with cloth napkins.

Ditch the paper napkins. Buy some nice cloth napkins in a color or colors that you like. They are a small investment when you compare them to the amount of money you spend each month on napkins. You'll save enough money to cover your investment in no time. And you can feel good that you're making less of an impact on the environment. Be sure to buy enough napkins so that you don't have to do laundry every 2 days.

  2. Step 2
Use washcloths instead of paper towels.

Keep washcloths on hand. Use those to wash dishes, clean off surfaces and clean little hands and faces.

  3. Step 3
Use towels to clean up spills.
Use towels to clean up spills.

Use old towels or dish towels to clean up spills. If the spill is on the counter, it's probably okay to use a dish towel. If it's on the floor, you probably will want to use an old towel instead of one you'll be wiping your dishes with.

  4. Step 4

Save money on paper products by using washable replacements whenever possible. Instead of using paper towels for cleaning windows, use a cloth diaper or microfiber cloth. Before you grab the paper to clean up, ask yourself if you could use something reusable instead. This will help your wallet and the environment will thank you!

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use the same washcloths for cleaning that you use for wiping off your kid's faces.
  • Find napkins and towels that you like - you'll be using them for a long time!

on 6/23/2009 I haven't been able to convince my husband to make the switch to cloth napkins yet, but I love using rags and dish towels instead of paper towels in the kitchen. 5*
