I would suggest thinking what your website is about and writing down keywords that come to mind. Then check them with Google's Keyword Tool to see if they are driving any traffic or not. Some obscure keywords might drive a lot of traffic while the ones you believe are golden do not drive any traffic.

Keywords should be in the "< title >" tag as well as in the URL of the webpage. Also try to use keywords in your headings. These include H1, H2, and H3 headings. Another method to improve SEO is to utilize keywords in your anchor text. Doing all of the above will show the search engine robot exactly what your webpage is about.

Links are another important part in knowing how to SEO. Links give your page authority. Both outbound and inbound links have equal importance. If you're site has a bunch of outbound links that do not pertain to your websites content, do they even matter? The same goes for websites pointing to your website. If they have nothing to do with your website, the search engine robot will consider these junk links. Links from sites that end in .edu and .gov have great authority and are the most reputable to search engines.

Content is the single most important factor in SEO optimization. Without good content, your webpage might as well be blank. What exactly is content? Content is the information on your website. Having more relevant content is a real boost for your site's rankings.

Another SEO techniques is to include a sitemap for your webpage. There are many free sitemap generators out there. Choose one and upload your sitemap to your server. Another overlooked aspect of SEO optimization is broken links. Search robots hate broken links and will punish your website for it. Make sure that all links work and take the robot to somewhere relevant.
