How to talk to your teen daughter about sex without being judgmental and giving her tools to make wise decisions.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comfortable, neutral space
  • Trust
  • Honesty
  • Love
  • Most important- an open mind
  1. Step 1

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can talk and listen easily. Avoid areas with TV's or other distracting activities. Lighten Up make a serious conversation matter of fact and fun!

  2. Step 2

Assure your daughter that she does not have to talk during this particular conversation but if she ever has any questions or concerns you are always available.

  3. Step 3

Start the conversation! Give your daughter the background and the down low on sex. Talk about consequences both emotional and physical. Give her ways to empower herself, for example discuss possible excuses to say for someone she may feel pressured (self imposed) to have sex with. Act out realistic Scenarios!

  4. Step 4

Finally recommend to your daughter an alternative responsible adult to talk to about sex. Make a pact with your daughter and that person: if/when your daughter wants to discusses sex that alternative adult will keep it confidential and ensure that she gives your daughter proper support.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow up with your teen every six months in a joking manner
  • Always have condoms in your house in a common area, just in case
  • give your daughter a copy of your health insurance card with name and number of family doctor
  • Don't be nervous, everyone has sex at some point in life. Your goal is to prolong it not avoid it.
