How to Design Floral Tile Patterns

When remodeling a bathroom or kitchen, ceramic tile patterns can add color and style without breaking your home remodeling budget. Instead of buying expensive specialty tiles, you can create a unique look in your bathroom by arranging plain tiles into interesting geometric patterns.

Floral tile patterns can create a soothing and welcoming environment in your home. If you are redoing your bathroom, here is a guide to make floral patterns with ceramic tiles.

Instructions

1. 

   Using graph paper and colored pencils, sketch designs for tile patterns that look like flowers. Depending on the size of the walls and floor in your bathroom, you can make large or small blossoms, or lay the tile in a combination of flower shapes and sizes.

   Also keep in mind that there are even patterns and odd patterns. Even flower shapes have a 2 by 2 square in the middle, odd shapes have a single tile in the center.

2. For the best effect, you should use small ceramic tiles; about 2 inches square. Using this as a guide, draw a diagram of the walls and floor areas that you wish to tile, and think about how best to arrange the floral pattern.

3. 

   Straight rows of flowers creates a pleasing effect on bathroom walls and tub surrounds. Space the tiles evenly using colors that complement each other. Three-color and four-color patterns are easy on the eyes.

4. 

   For a twist on the traditional method of laying square tiles, you can mount the bathroom wall tiles at an angle, so they look like diamonds. If you do this, you will have to cut the border tiles, unless you prefer zig-zag edges.

5. 

   For the bathroom floor, you can lay tiles in a skew square pattern.

6. 

   If you don't have a lot of wall space to work with, but you want to add decoration with ceramic fixtures, consider making a border pattern of flowers. You can arrange a row of blossoms, or design flowers with stems.

7. Create several drafts of geometric floral tile patterns so that you find the right look for your bathroom remodeling, or kitchen remodeling project.
